Beyond Borscht!
I was talking to Marlon from Fairy Juice Bar a couple weeks ago about their reformulated Astro Kiss juice, which now has pomegranates instead of beets in it. (It's delicious – give it a try!) It, and the gorgeous stacked red and orange beets at the Stoneberry Farm tent got me thinking about creative ways to incorporate beets into dishes.
Beets are a summer staple in New York and are surprisingly versatile; you can make beet gnocchi with a rich purple hue, beet and tomato salad with dill from Great Joy Family Farm, or these tasty veggie beet and feta burgers for those summer cookouts.
These days, it's becoming more and more difficult to pick which fruits to include in the blog, between the peaches and red currants at Wright's Farm and the white raspberries at Caradonna Farm, but I spied some lovely plums at Caradonna last week that got me excited and sent me on a recipe hunt. For something super refreshing on these sweltering summer days, try this scallop-and-plum ceviche. Surely, Pura Vida's exquisite scallops are known to you by now.
You can also make this plum jam to jazz up a porkchop from R & M Farm or any other or to remind you of these lazy days of summer come January. Some summer plum cake rounds us off with a flavorful fruit-filled dessert.
Pizza Vitale is filling in for Dough Nation Pizza this week, and pitmaster Jeremy James of SMOK'D should be back with his rotisserie game hens - fingers crossed.
(Last week, Jeremy was unable to make it to the Bronxville Farmers Market because he was trapped in his home by a giant bear in his front yard. That bear has good taste!).
We encourage you to nosh and relax at one of our colorful cafe tables while Milton plays fantastic music from 10:30-12:30.
Grab a head-turning bouquet from Teranga Flower Farm before you head home.
We'll see you at the market!
