Honey Dew, Hand Pies and Honey Crisp

PLEASE NOTE:  The market will return to the newly paved Main Street School lot on Sunday 9/4, 9am to 1:30pm.

The variety of melons this year just may be the most I’ve ever seen at the market. Honey dew, cantaloupe, canary, torpedo, watermelon...red, orange, yellow. All, oh so sweet!

Perfect time for this Cantaloupe Slab Salad. Pick up your cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and basil too and some Arlotta Food Studio olive oil.

Maybe a simple Watermelon Salad is more your thing. Combine 4 cups seeded watermelon chunks, 1/2 small jalapeño, seeded & finely diced,  1/8 cup cup finely chopped fresh mint leaves.  Drizzle lightly with extra virgin olive oil and top with 1/4 cup feta crumbles.  Serve immediately.

This Watermelon, Corn and Tomato Salad  is a perfect example of the saying “if it grows together, it goes together.”

And did you know, that just like pumpkin, you can roast melon seeds?

Nutmeg Cafe and Bakery’s empanadas are the perfect hand-held meal. Available in beef, chicken and vegetarian, warm them up while you make a quick market salad and your meal is complete. Same to be said for Escargot Voyageur’s French take on turnovers, stuffed with chicken, pork or escargot.

Though they’re cakes, Charlotte’s Home Kitchen, minis are also “hand helds”, the perfect way to sample her creative family recipes featuring local herbs and flowers. Available too in larger sizes and seasonal flavors such as Pear Peony and Strawberry Basil. Charlotte will also be bringing her new gluten-free sourdough bread this week.

And speaking of, Hand Held Kitchen food truck is back with all your favorite sandwiches and panne cotta with local summer berries.

I think each year at the market the apple varieties also increase. This year’s crops are just beginning, so check out Caradonna Farms and Wrights Farm each week for what’s available.

Fun Fact:  Apples are a member of the rose family of plants, along with pears, peaches, plums and cherries, and 25 percent of an apple’s volume is air; that’s why they float.

Take a shortcut in this Gnocchi with Brown Butter Ricotta and Applerecipe by buying some La Trafila gnocchi, (when they return next week after their holiday break), or ricotta from Bambino Ravioli if you’re making your own. You can also substitute your toasted melon seeds for the pumpkin seeds.

Between them, R&M Farms, Pura Vida, Hudson Valley Fisheries and Farm Eats, have plenty for your grill, assuming you will be having a bbq or two on this long weekend. Ask them for special cuts and grilling suggestions too. Remember to grab some eggplant, corn and portobellos to throw on the grill as well. Newell Farmlands has the perfect organic fresh whole ingredient marinades for all.

Seed-on-Hudson Flowers is back from their Scotland soirée. Stop by to see what was blooming when Katie returned and I’m sure she has some tales to tell too.

College bound students always need personal care products. Copper Faucet Soup Company will happily fill your needs for care packages, gifts and your own personal everyday use.

See you on Sunday...back at the Main Street School!
