Celebrate all who "mother" at the market this Sunday!
Moms come in all different forms. But one thing they all have in common?
They love spring tulips.
Especially fancy parrot or queensland tulips from Sea Change Flower & Farm.
Flower farmer Sam Ritter is bringing her hand-harvested, long-legged beauties to the market on Sunday and they are as long-lasting as they are painterly. And, bless them, they just get prettier and prettier as they blossom then wane.
Save yourself the stress of rushing to the market to nab a bunch (or two or three) and pre-order here.
I know that if my French mother absolutely had to choose between fancy tulips and a bloomie soft-ripened goat cheese from Edgwick Farm, the cheese would win. Especially if said cheese were paired with a baguette from Bien Cuit Bakery.
They have three types: one wearing a layer of herbes de provence under its white mold rind, one bathed in a local, small-batch bourbon, and one laced with vegetable ash. Each half-pound wheel is $12.
It's hard for Edgwick to keep these popular, seasonal cheeses in stock, so make a beeline for bloomies when you get to the market.
Other market gift ideas for Mom?
Diana's Aprons & Masks is back with sweet new make-up pouches and totes. This local costume designer & seamstress always picks the coolest fabrics! How can cooking not be fun when wearing one of her whimsical aprons?
And, if Mom is a gardener, the tables at Sun Sprout Farm, Homegrown Nursery Farm and Caradonna Farm will be brimming with flowering plants, as well as ready-to-plant vegetables and herbs.
R&M Farms is now bringing cheddar bacon beef patties. A night of grilling might be just what mom needs this Mother's Day. Don't forget to pick up your buns from Wave Hill Breads to elevate that burger. Add bright radish Kimchi from Forward Roots to elevate any variation on a burger, from salmon to veggie.
Mama Lam's (curries and pastes and sauces) returns on Sunday for those of you who want to cook Malaysian for your Mama.
Asparagus season is upon us...here's a recipe for roasted asparagus with crispy leeks and briny capers that is intensely flavorful and can act as a main dish or be partnered with steamed fresh cod or grilled steak. (You can find lovely leeks at Four E Farms tent or at the Madura tent and Kontoulis has the best finishing oil for drizzling). For steak, head to FarmEATS and, while you're there, congratulate Drew George for taking over the Revenge BBQ space on Main St. So many of our market vendors have opened their own brick and mortar businesses in the Rivertowns. Always a "proud Mama" moment for us when it happens.
This Spanish "revuelto" recipe by one of my favorite chefs, David Tanis, might just be perfect for Mother's Day brunch at home.
You can pick up the chorizo at R&M Farm as well as Mangalitsa's. Don't eat meat? NP. Use Pura Vida shrimp instead.
Rescue Dog Treats is officially back this week.
And, our favorite Brooklyn crooner, Milton, is performing with Jeff Eyrich.
Happy Day to all the moms out there. You know who you are.
