Ending our winter season with a BANG!
Well, we did it! When the pandemic forced us to hold our winter market outdoors we fretted.. Who would come out on a freezing February day to buy apples, bread and fish?
YOU DID.
On behalf of everyone who plays a part in running this market we want to thank you for sticking by us. This Sunday is our last bi-weekly market. Starting June 6th we will be open weekly from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. But let's not get ahead of ourselves.
This Sunday will be special for many reasons.
For starters, local songbird, Ruby Reilly will be performing in the music tent with her ukelele astride her signature red stool. Ruby used to be a regular at the market before she went off to college and beyond. In town for a brief visit before moving out West she is gracing us with a last performance. We expect to see many Ruby Reilly fans!
Madura Farms is bringing more of their thick asparagus stalks which tend to sell out early. Since we are lucky enough to have fantastic scallops at the market every week, why not make a spring risotto with scallops and asparagus?
Because Madura's asparagus stalks are so thick, they are also perfect for the grill. We usually don't talk about grilling until Memorial Day but this recent spate of July weather has us dusting off our Webers early.
Why not branch out and throw some fennel on the grill? This recipe for grilled fennel salad with fresh herbs and shaved Parmesan couldn't be easier and it's a perfect side dish for grilled R & M pork chops or grilled swordfish from Pura Vida.
Get your rhubarb while you still can! Here's Mark Bittman's classic rhubarb crisp recipe sans strawberries.
If you're getting a bit of late start getting your garden going this year, Nick Storrs, of Homegrown Nursery has plenty of starter plants. Added bonus: Nick is always so generous with his plant knowledge and advice. We're so lucky to have him.
Sun Sprout Farm also has lots of organic herb and vegetable seedlings. Since they are with us only in the winter season, this will be their last visit with us for a while. We've loved having them! Eliva, the young lady who runs their stall, will be leaving Sun Sprout to start her own farm with her family. We wish her the best!
It's going to be hot on Sunday so make sure you pick up some iced Teagevity tea when you get to the market. Coffee more your jam? Don Carvajal's cold brew is the latest Rivertowns addiction.
See you at the market!
