Closing Out January
Many of us have revamped our food relationships in the last few years.
Be that change by choice or force, hopefully you’ve discovered some new favorites and helpful assistance from the market. Changing work and school schedules, along with compromised socialization have led to more cooking and eating at home and a newfound appreciation of our healthy and varied market ingredients. Nutritious, ready to eat main dishes and sides are available in a wide range of choices.
Anthi’s Greek Specialties brings the traditional staples each week like spanakopita and moussaka, and always seems to add something new. They have gluten-free and vegan options as well as sweet and savory items. Before coming to Westchester, Paul owned Anthi’s Greek Food in Manhattan’s Upper West Side and city folk still visit him in Westchester for their favorites.
True Food’s mission is to “make healthy, pure, nutrient rich food; inspiring people to eat better, eat mindfully, and live longer.” Their wide range of soups, salads, sides, mains and sweets make this easy and tasty. A favorite of mine is one of their delicious blends of chicken salad over fresh market greens. Their sweet potato and quinoa burgers are also a perfect vegan option.
Nutmeg not only has great pastry but soups, salads and savory pies too. Cindy loves working with fresh ingredients and is always dreaming up new flavor combinations. I recently tried a poblano pepper soup that was delicious and their pot pies are usually a sellout.
Jody’s Kitchen soups are a meal in themselves. Her choices this week are extra hearty with lots of warming spices. Pre-order on her website for best selection because they go fast. On the menu this weekend are Pork and Black Bean Chili, Portuguese-style Chorizo with Potato and Kale, Beet Coconut Ginger, Ribollita/Tuscan Beans and Greens Stew, and Immunity Booster Broth.
In addition to their signature risotto balls, diRiso brings fresh frozen meat sauce, meat and vegetarian lasagna and gluten-free eggplant parmigiana. La Trafila Fresh Pasta was a big hit on their first visit two weeks ago. We know you’ll be back for more, or to check them out if you missed them last market. Their gnocchi and market greens would put this easy sheet pan dinner over the top.
Fish is always a quick and healthy option and you’ll find some of the best choices around between Pura Vida and Hudson Valley Fisheries. Check out Hudson Valley Fisheries website for a little recipe inspiration.
What kinds of produce will you find at the market in January? Caradonna Farm has more apple varieties than you’re probably familiar with, and also pears, due to their excellent storage facilities.
Between 4E Farm, Orchard Hill Organics, Letterbox and Madura, you’ll see plenty of greens, mushrooms, potatoes, cauliflower, squash, beets, fennel, carrots, Brussels sprouts, onions, parsnips, and maybe a few other surprises.
Remember the orange Hand Held Kitchen food truck that visited the market a few times last spring? They’re back this week with those “substantial and sustainable sandwiches” on homemade bread featuring local ingredients. Leila’s Empanadas also will be there with their always popular empanadas, arepas, maduros and tostones.
Just a reminder that our next market will not be until the day before Valentine’s Day. You may want to guarantee the best choices available this week by visiting La Petite Occasion for award-winning caramels and toffee, Marcelina Orange Treats for Cara Cara orange peel wrapped in dark chocolate, and Raw Chocolate Love for pure, raw organic bars and truffles.
See you on Sunday!
