November
The time to pause, reflect, plan. A perfect way to do this is with a steamy mug of Teagevity’s Pumpkin Chai or Don Carvajal’s Greca Blend. Both of these vendors have a great selection to brew your own and share with friends.
There are gifts aplenty to be found at the market. Hanukkah sneaks in early this year, on the coattails of Thanksgiving. Myriad Mirage has perfect presents for many on your list. Gina’s poetic pieces crafted from nature are one of a kind and her collection includes mezuzot with kosher scrolls. Copper Faucet Soap Company also has some great ideas for your gifting. Handcrafted natural bath salts and bath bombs, body butters, lotions and loofahs are a few choices. Also candles and diffusers in pleasing seasonal scents.
As the temperatures drop we welcome the warmth of comforting foods. Between Berry Brook Farm, Caradonna Farm, Stoneberry Farm and Madura Farm, you’ll find all the root vegetables you’ll need for this recipe for root vegetables fries from the Pollan Family table. Farm Eats has the maple syrup you'll need and Arlotta Food Studio has both your olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
The first frost of fall didn’t hit Westchester until this week so now you will begin to notice some changes on market tables. Hunter and Connor are gathering the last of the harvest on their Katonah Stoneberry Farm property. You’ll see them for three more Sundays before their winter break. There’s still plenty of choice and color on their tables and a couple recent standouts have been the watermelon and black radishes. Not only are they great raw or pickled but equally pleasing roasted, sautéed and stir fried. Here’s a warming and delicious Seattle-style smoked salmon chowder loaded with cubed potatoes, capers for zing, and cream cheese for a smooth richness.
It’s just like they serve at Seattle Pikes Place Market, one of the Northwest’s premier farmers markets. Easy to make it our own with some Pura Vida smoked salmon or Hudson Valley Fisheries smoked trout and perfect to serve with crusty bread from Bien Cuit or Wave Hill.
PLEASE NOTE: Ready Set Sharp knife sharpening is unable to attend his regularly scheduled first Sunday this month, but he will be joining us NEXT SUNDAY, November 14. That gives you all the more time to gather those dull cutting implements for a holiday sharpening. Due to the NYC Marathon, making city travel difficult, Hudson Valley Fisheries will be absent this week and return next week.
Time “falls back” this weekend and although most of our clocks now reset themselves automatically, we welcome that extra hour before leaving the house on Sunday morning.
See you at the market!
