Pears anyone?
As the market manager, it's always fun to observe what vendors buy from one another at the end of the market day. As we were packing up the market last Sunday, Rashaun, from Madura Farm made a beeline for Caradonna Farm to pick up some fruit for the week, and what did he grab? A variety of gorgeous pears!
In addition to inspiring me to buy some myself, this sent me down a rabbit hole of excellent autumnal pear recipes. Jumping right in, this pear chutney is an easy weeknight side that uses the pear’s natural, juicy sweetness and aromatic spices to add fall-forward flavors to skillet-browned pork chops from Letterbox Farm. On the side, or as a refreshing snack to brighten these gloomy October days, try some thinly sliced pears seasoned with hot sauce, lime, and deliciously nutty Salvadoran alguashte, or crushed pumpkin seeds. You’ll find plenty of squash and pumpkins at our farm stands this week.
It’s always nice to cap the evening with something sweet like this pear ginger crumble made with candied ginger and a quinoa-oat crumble.Get your fresh ginger from Halal Pastures. And, if you choose to substitute the quinoa crumble for a granola of your choice from The Hampton Grocer you will not be disappointed!
No doubt, our favorite baker, Amy, at Elderberry Rd. will come up with something delicious to make with seasonal pears. Perhaps one of her popular fruit upside-down cakes?
If you’re feeling especially seasonal, try infusing pears and hard cider with this homemade fennel and coriander syrup for warming pear cider cocktails!
Empabake Empanadas and Goode & Local are ready to serve up the perfect market brunch this week! As is Chef Thierry at Escargot Voyageur with his sizzling crépe pan always at the ready. Plus, Shh--our--dough will be returning with their flavorful par-baked sourdough loaves that you can finish baking while you prep dinner or as your guests walk through the door.
Our house band, Milton will be playing from 10:30-12:30, so come on by for what promises to be another beautiful fall day at the market!
