Small Pleasures

Someone just stopped me on the street and asked for permission to give me a hug. She wanted to thank me for the market and all the joy it brings her family.

With all that is going on in the world right now, between the ugly politics, unspeakable wars and historic storms, being able to soak up some welcome sunshine at the market and be surrounded by small, wholesome pleasures is a blessing. One that, I know, few of you take for granted.

This week, one of those small pleasures includes the gorgeous eggs at Letterbox Farm and the peppers at Halal Pastures. Put them together and make some shakshuka with peppers feta and olives. This can be a breakfast of champions or a delicious dinner with a salad of tender market greens.

Prefer your shakshuka in shades of green? Try this recipe which pulls in seasonal leeks. For extra pleasure, top with White Moustache labneh or yogurt.

It's a well known fact that things that grow together go together in the kitchen. Winter squash and kale are both abundant at the market right now (and so many different varieties of each!)  so why not attempt this butternut squash and kale pasta? It calls for butternut squash but feel free to go rogue!

The colors at the market are stunning right now. The skin on the apples at Caradonna Farm (Scarlet Crush, Winesap, LudaCrisp and Arkansas Black) reflects the changing leaves.Check out the rainbow of color at the AYA Hummus tent.

How many people are you feeding at Thanksgiving? You should know this by now... and you should have ordered your turkey from R & M Farm. Don't worry if you haven't yet, they have plenty left. A safe rule of thumb is about a pound and a half of turkey per person. Round up if you look forward to leftovers (and who doesn't?). If you're hosting a Thanksgiving potluck affair, make sure you have an extra large turkey so that you can send your “side-dish” guests home with some of the bird. It's the right thing to do!

Bitchin’ Babkas is here this weekend. Their name is a bit racy but their product is delicious. Also joining us is Cocoa Designs Pottery... should you need a gift for someone special next week, or if October is when you start your holiday shopping.

You know who you are!

The weather should be glorious again this weekend so plan on grabbing lunch from the Dough Nation Pizza Truck, Grumpy Dumpling or one of Chef Thierry’s incredible goat cheese quiches at Escargot Voyageur and stick around a while.

Our multi-talented market manager, Sierra, will be performing in the music tent as part of The Altogether band.

See you at the market!
