Summer’s Last Hurrah

It’s probably no surprise to you that this is the last week of summer. If your new busier, tighter schedules haven’t told you, then the crisp mornings and earlier sunsets have.

The Jewish High Holidays are also approaching. A word to the wise... talk with your favorite vendors this Sunday to reserve your Rosh Hashanah meal ingredients for next Sunday. Brisket, chicken, salmon, lamb, special desserts, and challah breads all sell quickly on holiday weekends.

While this chicken dish sheet-pan chicken dish can serve as an easy sheet-pan centerpiece for your Rosh Hashanah celebrations, (hello, apples and honey!), it can also double as an easy autumnal weeknight dinner.

Earthy leeks are symbolic in the Jewish holiday meal: “that those who wish ill will instead be cut off and their bad intentions punished.” This head-turning Salmon en croute with creamed leeks is actually quite simple to prepare and may just become a favorite in your culinary repertoire.

R&M Farm’s chicken and Pura Vida salmon will elevate both of these recipes. You’ll also find local honey at Madura Farms and Goode and Local.

The produce tents are flush with vegetables, herbs and fruit right now.

A colorful vegetarian option is this roasted cauliflower with hummus.

Make the recipe even easier by using AYA Hummus instead of making your own from scratch.

New vendor Peaceful Easy Vegan joins the market this week. Alison and Tommy Philp have been farmer’s market shoppers for over a decade. She was an early childhood teacher for 20+ years in the Yonkers Public School system. He is an entrepreneur and independent filmmaker. Combined, they’ve been eating and cooking a vegan/plant-based diet for over 40 years and have learned how to prepare vegan cuisine that is packed with rich flavor, using local ingredients, natch. Their goal is to attract not only the vegan community but also people who are curious about vegan and plant-based living or who just enjoy delicious food. You must try their lasagna!

Mama Lam’s is back with her curry sauces and pastes just in time for the slightly cooler nights. Stock up on eggplant and potatoes to make some delicious curries this week.

September is a month full of change. I find that chocolate cake helps with any transition. Don’t you agree? Arlotta Food Studio’s olive oil and Don Carvajal coffee or Teagevity tea are surprising ingredients in this dairy-free chocolate cake. Add some sliced seasonal plums or pears with fresh mint to the plate for a real market-driven dessert.

Seed-on-Hudson Flowers’ dahlias continue to dazzle. This week, Katie will also offer a selection of native seedlings for autumn planting grown by her Hastings neighbor, Mark Christie of Stonecutter Nursery. Mark specializes in “beneficial” perennials, including species that are rare, threatened, endangered or keystone in NY State.

We’re happy to welcome Ursula Hansberry back to the music tent. Listen here to her latest recording, then stop by for more.
