Time to Start Thinking of Gardening and Mother’s Day

Welcome back to Nick Storrs of Homegrown Kitchen Garden Nurserywith his certified organic seeds, seedlings and wealth of gardening knowledge and experience. Currently utilizing the propagation sheds at the Lyndhurst estate in Tarrytown, Nick was also a gardener in Central Park and managed the Randall’s Island Urban Farm for 8 years. Also an instructor at the New York Botanical Gardens and Lyndhurst, with an admiration for generations of gardeners, he is proud to help people continue in this tradition. His affable manner easily draws you in and don’t forget to congratulate him on the recent addition to their family!

Rashaun at Madura Farms tells us they will be bringing that prized spring delicacy, ramps, this week and maybe asparagus. Ramps, also referred to as wild garlic or leeks, have a short growing season, usually less than a month, so get them while you can. Substitute ramps, raw or cooked, in recipes calling for garlic, scallions or leeks. They can also be grilled or roasted since the stems, leaves, and bulbs all are edible. This riff on the classic potato leek soup is light and perfect for Spring. Grab some carrots and potatoes at the market. Arlotta Food Studio olive oil can easily be substituted for the butter and for added nutrients, substitute Jody’s Kitchen Immunity Booster Broth for some or all of the water. The perfect accompaniment to this soup would be a loaf of miche from Bien Cuit, wild grain sourdough from Wave Hill, or 3x3 Kitchen’s new gluten-free forbidden rice and black sesame multi-grain.

Jeff at Orchard Hill Organics is excited about their current crops...”spring parsnips, radishes, beautiful bagged baby red Russian kale, spinach and mesclun salad mix. Also 2 types of beets, red ace and chiaggia, with very abundant greens.” Have you been throwing away your beet greens? Chop them up and add them to a soup or stew, or prepare sautéed with onions (or ramps!) and some tasty Mangalitsa bacon. Here’s sauteéd green beans recipe for inspiration.

Mothers Day is just a calendar page flip away. In fact, our next market will be on Mother’s Day. Mermade is back with custom greeting cards and hand embroidered gifts. La Petite Occasion has gift sizes of Syracuse salt that come with a pretty wooden spoon. She is also bringing a new treat, millionaire bars, a chocolate and caramel topped shortbread.

Escargot Voyageur’s weekly specials are ragout de pork Provençal, stuffed Cornish hen, duo of stuffed bell peppers vegetarian, Grand Marnier mille feuille and their regular assortment of quiche, savory hand pies and a soup of the day.

Sunday looks to be living up to its namesake with mild spring temperature predicted so check out these and SO MANY other enticing tents and trucks.

See you at the market!
