Boo!

What frightens you more: Halloween ghouls and goblins or the prospect of waking up in pitch darkness for another week before we set our clocks back?

If you chose the latter, might I recommend starting your day on a sweet note by using millet from Great Joy Family Farms to make oven-baked grains with pecans and maple syrup? And in case you’re looking to get a jump-start on the day’s meals during that morning downtime, they also have an array of dried beans perfect for this slow-cooker black bean soup. Just the thing to feed the troops before (or after) trick or treating.

At last week’s market, I was lucky enough to get a tour of Madura Farms’ mushroom selection, and it would be utterly foolish of me not to point you in that direction. They grow a rich variety of all kinds of fabulous fungi: hen of the woods, oyster, and shiitake being only a few delicious examples. If you’re feeling fancy, try using some of their lion’s mane mushrooms in this recipe for creamy vegan polenta with mushrooms and kale. If mushrooms aren’t up your alley, pick up some sweet potatoes and whip up a batch of sweet potato and onion dip for your next dinner party.

Although I love foisting delicious and hearty recipes on you, I am also a major proponent of a gorgeous salad. Try using some fresh greens from 4E Farms in this leafy herb salad that’s sure to complement any cold-weather meal you cook up.

If you’re leaning sweet, stop by and get yourself some confections from La Petite Occasion; confectioner Michele Kim makes small-batch caramels using local creamery butter and Syracuse salt. Her seasonal caramel apples coated in crunchy, crushed peanuts are looking particularly scrumptious. Or, if you’re feeling ambitious, stop by Wrights Farm for the supplies to make homemade applesauce for this apple sheet cake with cinnamon cream cheese frosting.

As always, stop by Don Carvajal Café to get your caffeine fix while you mozy around. We always recommend a “recognizance tour” of the market before you shop. Or grab an organic juice or smoothie from Ambrosia Food Truck or Fairy Juice Bar which should complement the Dough Nation pizza truck quite nicely this week.

Intuition Quartet will be playing at the music tent from 10:45-12:45, and we can’t wait for you to hear them.

We’ll see you at the market!
