Harvest Hues

As I walked around the market last weekend, I was stunned by the vibrant colors of August's produce. Though summer may be winding down, the variety of what you can cook certainly doesn't have to. At Caradonna Farm, you'll find the deep blues and purples of blueberries and blackberries, which are delicious in sticky summer desserts like fruity rice pudding or decadent blueberry oatmeal streusel French toast On the other hand, they are a surprisingly delightful addition to a savory roasted chicken dinner or skillet meatballs. You can pick up your farm-raised chicken and pork from FarmEats and R&M Farm, and you'll find terrific, locally grown organic rice at Great Joy Family Farm.

Lovers of cherry tomatoes also have a lot to celebrate these days, since both Wright's Farm and Caradonna Farm have a beautiful harvest on display. This recipe for pesce all'acqua pazza (fish with white wine and cherry tomatoes) is a bright summer dish that would be delicious with your choice of fish from Pura Vida's local catches, while some balsamic-roasted red onion and cherry tomato pasta would make fantastic use of La Trafila's fresh pasta, onions from Madura Farm, and garlic from Stoneberry Farm. As a fun bonus, Wright's Farm is now selling whole basil plants so you can garnish the dish with the freshest herbs possible!

Fleur Piton Candle Co. will be selling some hand-poured goodness this Sunday, while Muscovado Sweets will have all kinds of gorgeous vegan desserts for sale. Last time Cynthia came to our market, I took home a sampler platter of cakes and banana bread, and it was all gone before the end of the day. Yum!

If you come to the market hungry (as I heartily recommend you do), you'll have your choice of wood-fired pizza from DoughNation, authentic Spanish food (paella, anyone?) from Spain at Home, or perfectly crispy empanadas from Leila's Empanadas. Ursula Hansberry will be playing music from 10:30-12:30, so you are in for a treat!
