A new season begins...
And with a new season comes new vendors!
I’m so excited to welcome SMOK’D to the market this week. Musician turned pitmaster, Jeremy James, cooks up aromatic rotisserie game hens at the market, ready to take home. Use Jeremy's smoked chicken as a base for this grilled chicken with charred-scallion chimichurri recipe. You can pick up spring greens, parsley, and other fresh herbs from at Stoneberry Farm who return this week and will be with us through Thanksgiving. (Yay!).
Varietal Bread Company will be joining us for the first time on Sunday. We love everything about this new baker from Dobbs Ferry and the way he makes his artisanal bread. Small production, gorgeous, rustic market presentation and he uses flour milled locally from heritage wheat and rye varietals, exclusively. With bread this good, I predict that Chris will not be able to keep bread making as a “hobby” for long. I also predict that there will be many super fans among you.
Emmaline’s Hot Sauce joins our market family, too, with a spicy sauce made with fresh peppers and herbs that has survived four-generations of Emmalines. Try it on these potato ‘salad’ and tomatillo tacos with olive oil from Arlotta Food Studio and potatoes from Madura Farm. I’m told it's delicious in a Bloody Mary, too.
There are beautiful spring radishes at the market right now, which you can use in some roasted salmon with peas and radishes along with salmon from Pura Vida Fisheries and butter from Goode and Local. The kale at Great Joy Family Farm was also particularly vibrant last week, and I'm looking forward to trying it with pasta from La Trafila in this Spring minestrone with kale and pasta.
If you’re looking for a summery dessert, you can make rhubarb almond crumb cake with rhubarb from Madura or Caradonna Farm, eggs from R&M Farm, and rolled oats from River Valley Community Grains, also new to us this year, though familiar to many of you who shop the Hastings market. If Sunday morning pancakes are your jam, head straight to their tent for some local flour, or better yet, pancake mix made with local flour.
Of course, if you’re looking for something sweet to eat during the market, we’re excited to welcome Mom & Ice Pops back to Irvington to kick off the summer season! You can always count on them to weave hyper-seasonal ingredients into their flavors, like rhubarb.
You can also grab pizza from DoughNation Food Truck, wraps from The Wild Radish, or crepes from Escargot Voyageur as you wander around the market for seasonal inspiration in the produce bins. In addition to our amazing food vendors, we're happy to welcome back Copper Faucet Soap Co. with thier aromatic candles, diffusers, and soaps so you can be reminded of the market in the week ahead.
This year we are bringing you not one but two flower vendors who will be alternating each week. This week, we welcome Teranga Flower Farm. In Senegal, Teranga is a philosophy and a way of life centered around hospitality, warmth, openness and generosity, says flower farmer Dieynaba.
We couldn’t think of a better sentiment with which to kick off our 14th summer season.
We’ll see you at the market!
Sierra, your Market Manager
