Shop for your holiday week at the market!

Halal Pastures Farm has been bringing large, plump fava beans over the last few weeks and I've watched shoppers pick them up and put them back because, presumably, they are not sure what to do with them.

Favas provide a fantastic, creamy texture and lots of protein to whatever dish they star in. You can get creative by using Wave Hill’s light, crunchy, Romana-style pizza dough as the base for this flatbread with fava beans, cucumbers, and burrataMaplebrook Farm Creamery’s rich burrata will provide a contrast to the clean, cooling cucumbers you place on top. Samer from Halal Pastures had me try some of their zesty lemon cucumbers last week, and I think they would be a crisp, hydrating, and new take on an old classic for this summertime dish!

They have so many different types of cucumbers in fact, you should definitely make yourself a cucumber smoothie this weekend.

Grated carrots from Madura Farm shine in this extremely French carrot salad, which is super easy to make and packed with flavor. Silky olive oil from Arlotta Food Studio complements tangy lemon juice, sweet honey, and fresh, green herbs in this seasonal dish, the perfect side dish to your holiday burgers and brats. It is equally delicious when served alongside crisp wine and naturally fermented sourdough from Bien Cuit. This week, I tried–and loved–Mossy Stone Farm’s spicy salad mix with Arlotta Food Studio’s blood orange olive oil for a light and airy lunch. Top with smoked salmon from Pura Vida for the easiest dish ever! Or with some of their roasted golden beets (a lot less messy to roast than their red counterparts!).

Try this golden beet salad on the Fourth and use feta cheese from Maplebrook.

Swing by the Wildyards Pasta tent to try some fresh pasta this week! I recently used their orecchiette in some cashew-based miso mac & cheese, and it transformed my meal into what felt like a gourmet experience. For those hunger pangs at the market, pay a visit to Urban Bohemia to see what flavorful vegan soups and pre-made dishes they have in store! Many of you have asked for gluten-free pasta from "the grain girls" as they call themselves...let's see what they come up with!

For dessert, try baking juicy apricots from Caradonna Farm into a seasonal tart. With just a few simple ingredients to bring out the balanced, sweet and tart (no pun intended) flavor of perfectly ripe apricots, you’ll be snacking on it all day. Make sure to try Elderberry Road’s velvety cherry upside down cake, or, if chocolate’s more your style, the “best chocolate chip cookies” in New York! Gina from Myriad Mirage will also be selling her beautiful nature-inspired jewelry this week for those of you who want a unique piece to show off this summer. Make sure to come by in time to hear Warren Banholzer’s awesome Americana from 10:30-12:30.
