Spring!
Spring has sprung! I've been hit with a hardy case of spring fever, and I'm excited to start cooking with all the local veggies that are starting to sprout and will soon be making their way to our market.
Until then, to celebrate longer, sunnier days, I recommend making this bright honey grilled chicken with citrus salad with chicken from R&M Farm, honey from Goode & Local and cilantro from 4E Green Farm. When the spring radishes start coming in (not soon enough!) you can slice them into the mix for extra zing.
And don't forget the blood orange or lemon-infused olive oil from Arlottta Food Studio.
You can also pick up frilly greens and carrots from Great Joy Family Farm to make some Vietnamese summer rolls. R&M's pork would also add heft and flair to these rolls.
For those of you who, like me, are always drawn to a hearty pasta dish, I recommend this fettuccine with asparagus and smoked salmon; of course, you can grab salmon smoked locally from Pura Vida and fresh pasta from La Trafila at this week's market. Too early for asparagus at the market...but soon! I'm also looking forward to testing out this vegan mushroom etouffee with oyster mushrooms from Madura Farm, celery from 4E Green Farm, and brown rice from Great Joy.
The dumpling man returns this Sunday after a short hiatus from the market with a new flavor: beef curry dumplings. We are so happy to see him–and his ramen noodles and sauces, too! This is the perfect time of year for ramen. Use enoki or shiitake mushrooms from Madura, bok choy from Great Joy and fresh tuna from our friendly fishmongers.
What's for dessert? This week, Nutmeg Bakery will be serving rose frosted sugar cookies to celebrate the arrival of spring. Anish Supreme Foods is offering up their sweet tahini bread twists–uniquely delicious. If you want to make something yourself to satisfy that sweet tooth, try some apple butter sticky buns with pecans and currants. You can pick up some large, yolky eggs from R&M Farm, and go ahead and make your own apple butter with the apples from Caradonna Farm for an even tastier result.
Be sure to stop by the Soaps on Hudson stall. I've been using their cedar smoke & ember bar since our last market, and I absolutely love it. No doubt, soapmaker Daphne will be offering up some soaps with some spring scents. And, our favorite botanical jeweler, GinaMarie of Myriad Mirage, returns with her unique handmade jewelry made with local flora. This must be her favorite time of year for inspiration!
The Fearless Cook Food Truck and Leila's Empanadas will join us again this week, so be sure to swing by their trucks and satisfy those hunger pangs. As always, you can grab coffee and tea (both hot and iced) from Don Carvajal Cafe and Teagevity.
